As Christians, we are in a continuous process of growth in relationship with God, each other, and self. This is especially true of those who have been called to service in the ordered ministries of the church. In addition to growing in faith, those who are currently serving, and those preparing to serve, PC(USA) congregations as ruling elders and deacons, with the Holy Spirit, have responsibilities to grow in the leadership specific to their calling. Ruling elders “are chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life" (PC(USA) Book of Order, G-2.0301), while the “ministry of deacons as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ" (G-2.0201).
